Orinoco Delta

Orinoco Delta

The Orinoco Delta in eastern Venezuela is fan-shaped, formed by the river as it splits into numerous channels called caños, which meander through the huge delta on their way to the sea. The two main channels are Rio Grande and Caño Manamo. Daily tides bring sea water up the caños, causing a tidal bore and appearing to reverse the flow direction of water. The Warao, the indigenous people of the Delta, live in stilt villages to cope with changes in water level, with boardwalks between the houses instead of streets, everyone travels by canoe. Wildlife includes parrots and macaws, howler monkey, freshwater dolphin and river turtles. Be sure to try your hand at piranha fishing!
